The Southbank Undercroft, beneath the Queen Elizabeth Hall on London’s South Bank, was never designed for skateboarding. Built as part of the Brutalist Southbank Centre in the late 1960s, the sheltered, disused space was quickly adopted by skaters, who were riding it as early as 1973. It has been skated ever since, making it the world’s longest continually used skate spot. When a redevelopment plan threatened to turn it into shops in 2013, skaters launched the Long Live Southbank campaign, which won the space’s long-term future in 2014 and later restored areas that had been closed off for years.
